Most people see cheap internet-based calling as a threat to incumbent operators. In the US, about 3m fixed-line residential users have switched to voice-over-internet (called VoIP) services. But the figure is growing about 50% per quarter according Deutsche Bank research. The fear is that new companies will come into the market and win market share.
But could VoIP prove a boon to incumbent operators? Oddly enough, it could help them compete with their bitterest rivals, the mobile operators.
