The dog days of August may almost be upon us, but British broadcasting is abuzz with activity. Cable operators NTL and Telewest are reportedly on the brink of a merger. RTL, the European broadcasting group owned by Germany’s Bertelsmann, is talks with United Business Media (UBM) about buying out its 35% stake in Channel 5. And ITV is being circled by private equity funds, and possibly US media giant Time Warner.
