When the German government acknowledged it had paid for stolen information on Liechtenstein accounts used by potential tax evaders, a top-ranking Swiss bank official compared the German action to “Gestapo” tactics. Now apparently the UK authorities have engaged in similar “Gestapo” practices by paying as much as £100,000 for information on suspect Liechtenstein accounts. The Gestapo analogy was crass and ill-judged, but it reflects the very real threat these aggressive new tactics pose to Europe...
