Sainsbury: Considering where it was this time last year, J Sainsbury deserves a pat on the back. The UK supermarket group increased its sales by 5.6% in the first half of this year. That’s faster than the industry as a whole, which means Sainsbury has been gaining back market share. Moreover, in spite of cutting prices it has managed to squeak up its retail operating margins from 1.8% to 1.9%.
