Jorma Ollila oversaw a golden age at Nokia. The retiring chief executive took the loss-making tire, electronics and cable-making firm and bet the Finnish group on the rise of mobile phones. Not only was he correct, but Nokia executed the strategy well. Sales rose more than ten-fold during his tenure. To illustrate the scale of the achievement, consider that the ex-rubber boot maker now builds about eight mobile phones a second.
