For UK retailers, Christmas doesn’t seem to have been quite as dreadful as feared. So it should be no surprise that private equity, which in recent years snapped up huge swathes of the high street, may be starting to nose about for an exit. Debenhams is a case in point. The department store’s private equity backers - TPG, CVC and Merrill Lynch Private Equity, have asked banks to put in proposals for a flotation.
